c.1948–1955
Description:
A striking mid-century Australian pottery panther in rich emerald drip glaze, made by Pates Pottery of NSW in the post-war era. These sleek “TV-top” animals became iconic in Australian interiors of the 1950s, blending Art Deco styling with modernist glamour. The tonal green glaze is classic Pates — deep pooling at the base, shading to lighter teal along the body with beautiful movement in the finish.
A wonderful statement piece for a sideboard, mantle or retro bar setting, and increasingly sought after by collectors of Australian pottery.
Measurements:
Length 26cm
Height 12cm
Depth 8.5cm
Condition:
Excellent vintage condition — no chips, cracks or repairs. Glaze retains strong sheen and colour.
Styling Notes:
Looks stunning against timber, cane, rattan or noir accents. Perfect for Hollywood Regency, Deco revival, mid-century modern or eclectic retro styling.
Deb’s Note:
Pieces like this defined the glamour of Australian living rooms in the 1950s. They add instant presence to a vignette and are becoming harder to source in good glaze and condition.
