A wonderfully nostalgic little pair of mid-century smoker’s accessories — including an Australian Brymay “Redheads” matchbox and a humorous celluloid matchbox case featuring the caption:
“Is this the bird, daddy?”
The novelty case features a classic cartoon zoo scene with children staring at a flamingo enclosure, beautifully capturing the playful humour and graphic style of the era.
Designed to slip over an ordinary cardboard matchbox, these decorative matchbox holders were once common little pocket accessories and souvenir novelties, though far fewer survive today in usable condition.
The included Brymay Redheads matchbox, with its iconic red-haired illustration, is now a piece of Australian design history in its own right.
Together they make a fantastic little display grouping for:
- tobacconiana collectors
- Australiana collections
- retro kitchen or bar styling
- novelty advertising displays
- photography props
- junk journals and memory boxes
Condition:
Both pieces show authentic vintage wear, staining, scratches, marks, and age-related patina consistent with decades of use and storage. The matchbox case has age staining and surface wear but retains wonderful nostalgic character.
