A storyteller in brass.

This elegant antique qalamdan — the traditional Persian pen box — was once a travelling companion of a writer or calligrapher more than 140 years ago. Crafted from solid brass and hand-embossed with deer, trees and geometric motifs, it carries both purpose and poetry: a holder for ink, nibs, pens — and thoughts.

This piece came from a private collection belonging to an antiques dealer who acquired it in the Middle East over fifty years ago. It then passed down to his son before finding its way to Kitten Vintage. Thought to date from the late 19th century (circa 1880s), it was originally used by scholars, poets, and official scribes.

A two-part design:

• The long ribbed compartment stored reed pens and quills.

• The lidded inkwell, with its graceful scallop-shaped lid, held ink and fine pigments.

It’s beautifully aged with a warm patina, softened edges, and visible hand-beaten marks that speak of genuine craftsmanship.

A tactile, soulful object — perfect for styling, display, desk décor, or simply for the pleasure of owning something that once held words before they were written.
