Royal Doulton large character jug Auld Mac D5823

Backstamp B: Auld Mac incised in the rear of the tam c.1938 - 1940, but Owd Mac on basestamp

Backstamp dates this example at c.1941

Designer: Harry Fenton

Approx 16cms (6 1/4") tall

In excellent condition, relative to the age of the piece

Some crazing seen at point blank inspection on the inside of the jug, but overall a great, early example (some 80 years old)

About Auld Mac: A song by Sir Henry Lauder, a 20th century singer and comedian, called "Bang went Saxpence" inspired this piece. In it a Scotsman named Mac found the prices too high in London because every time he made a move "bang went saxpence", which is incised on the back of his Tam, below "Auld Mac".
