DESCRIPTION
A beautiful early Australian chalkware vase featuring a hand-painted sunset scene with long-neck cranes at the water’s edge. These lightweight decorative vases were popular souvenirs during the Depression-era and were often bought as gifts or taken home from seaside and tourist towns.
The matte chalkware surface gives a soft, velvety texture, with the scene created by early stencil and spray techniques. Pieces like this are increasingly hard to find, as chalkware is a fragile medium and many examples have not survived.
MEASUREMENTS
Height: approx 19cm
Width: approx 10cm
CONDITION
Original early paint with expected flaking and surface wear to rim and shoulders (typical for chalkware of this age). No structural cracks or breaks. Stable and displayable.
STYLING IDEAS
• Beautiful in a 1930s / 1940s vignette
• Lovely on a shelf beside timber pieces or Australiana pottery
• Softens a vintage bedroom or vanity display
• Pairs well with books, lace and warm sunset tones
DEB’S NOTE
There’s something very gentle about these old chalkware pieces — they feel like little windows into another time. The silhouette of the cranes against the setting sun is classic pre-war souvenir art, quietly romantic and nostalgic.
